So here we are… enjoying a truly Canadian Thanksgiving.
In downtown Berlin.
I think that there are 15 of us. A collection of Canadians, Germans and a lone Yank.
Most are friends of Bryan’s. There’s Tosh, short for Macintosh, one of Bry’s best buds who’s been living in Berlin for almost 8 years. Tosh ruled the kitchen with an iron fist, with his girlfriend Anika. It was kind of like Iron Chef, without the Japanese or the TV cameras.
Then there’s Bryan’s other good friend, Rich. Rich is the infamous Richie Hawtin. He’s a world class DJ who travels more than Air Canada. The dinner was held in his sweet pad. Huge, open space, up on the 5th floor, with a sweet balcony.
This is a blurry shot of the Fehrsehturm from Rich’s balcony.
The other guys with us are mostly part of Richie’s posse of DJ artists/friends that play on his label, and now mostly live in Berlin.
The hotties? Those are the various hot German girls that we picked up off the street that day.
Actually, they’re friends of all the Canadian boys and most of them were enjoying their first Thanksgiving.
They were a great bunch.
And I learned something important about professional DJs. They are, as a rule, the one collection of people that sleep less than I do.
Two of the guys had been up for about 4 days prior to napping before coming to dinner. Apparently that’s part of the job. Hunh. Sounds like a perk to me!
So, anyway, the company was great. So was the food.
And, in true Canadian tradition, we had WAY too much food. A pair of turkeys, mashed potatoes, two types of squash, BBQ’d corn, two types of salad. And then, of course, the stuffing, the cranberry sauce and the gravy. It was all amazing. Well, except for the brussel sprouts. Those green balls of mush always taste like crap. No matter how you cook ‘em. So, aside from them, it was great.
And… in typical Thanksgiving style, we ATE way too much. When the tryptophan kicked in about 10:30 we were all ready to pass out. So we did the only think we could do. We drank more. A little wine, a little vodka, this great little desert wine the Rich pulled out.
And then we enjoyed a little pumpkin pie, a little apple pie and sat around the living room gabbing.
It was all in all an amazing time.
We even got home at a decent hour. Bryan and I rolled in at about 2 in the morning.
Nice to have a tradition from afar..
